2008 IIHF World Hockey Championship
Events Nova Scotia team members played a critical role in planning and executing this world-class event, held May 2 to 14, 2008. From preparing and submitting the winning bid document, with Quebec City as partner venue, to being named official host organization with granted rights from Hockey Canada and the IIHF.
Not only was the 2008 IIHF World Championship a raging success in terms of attendance -- with 203,925 in Halifax alone -- but it also received the 2009 PRESTIGE Award in the Sport Event of the Year (budget over $250,000) category from the Canadian Sport Tourism Association.
The combined total of visitor, capital and operational spending as a result of hosting the 2008 IIHF World Hockey Championship is estimated at $9 million, generating an estimated total of more than $22 million of economic activity in the province.
Another fact we can all take pride in is that Halifax is the first city in the world to host the three premier events of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF):
• 2003 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship
• 2004 IIHF World Women’s Hockey Championship
• 2008 IIHF World Championship
